Twitter-alike platform: META is considering launching decentralized platform similar to Twitter, code name P92

Meta owns several popular social media platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, as well as other products and services, such as Messenger, Oculus, Portal, Workplace, and Novi. Meta has over 3 billion monthly active users across its platforms, and over 60,000 employees worldwide.

Meta’s mission is to give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together. It also aims to advance the fields of artificial intelligence, virtual reality, augmented reality, and blockchain, among others. Meta’s core values are to be bold, focused, open, and build social value.

Meta is one of the most influential and innovative companies in the world, but also one of the most controversial and criticized. It is constantly evolving and expanding its products and services, as well as its vision and identity. That said, several reports now indicate that META is developing new platform, social media network that will be very similar to Twitter.

The upcoming app, known by the codename P92, shall soon be launched to the public. This app is set to be a text-based content platform, which shall support the widely-used ActivityPub protocol. This protocol is famously known for driving Mastodon and other decentralized applications that offer a competitive edge to Twitter.

According to a report from TechCrunch, the P92 app shall carry the branding of Instagram and shall provide users with the option to log in using their existing Instagram credentials. The app’s minimum viable product shall allow users to broadcast their posts to individuals using other servers. At this point it still remains unknown if users can follow and view content of other individuals on different servers. Additionally, the minimum viable product of the app shall feature a rights manager, which shall only cover first-party content at the beginning and shall not extend to third-party content originating from other applications and servers.

What is known about P92 so far?

As the release date of the upcoming P92 app approaches, excitement builds around the potential of this new text-based content platform. Among its initial features are tappable links in posts with previews, user bios, usernames, verification badges, and the ability to share images and videos.

While functionalities such as followers and likes are expected to be present, it remains unclear whether commenting and messaging features will be included in the app’s first version. In any case, users can expect the P92 app to uphold the same privacy policy as its parent company, in addition to a supplementary privacy policy and terms of service that specifically address cross-app data sharing.

The development of P92 couldn’t come at a better time, as Twitter continues to grapple with technical difficulties leading to frequent outages and glitches. Many users have begun seeking out alternative platforms, such as Mastodon and Post.news, although some of these have seen a decline in users following an initial surge of interest.

With a global user base of 3.74 billion across its social media apps, including 2 billion monthly active users on Instagram, Meta is well-positioned to provide a new decentralized social media space where creators and public figures can share timely updates about their interests. As the release date draws nearer, all eyes are on the potential of P92 to change the landscape of social media as we know it.
