Virginia law enforcement works to promote safe driving and reduce accidents during October

Statistics from the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles and the Virginia State Police show that October is the most dangerous month to drive on Virginia’s highways.

Both agencies will join 19 other local law enforcement agencies in taking part in Operation Crash Reduction, which aims to promote safe driving and lower the number of accidents.

On the program Here at Home, we had a conversation with John Saunders, the director of the Virginia Highway Safety Office at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), about this campaign and how all drivers in Virginia can adopt simple safety habits, such as wearing seat belts, decreasing their speed, and engaging in other safe driving behaviors. The objective is to forestall collisions, cut down on injuries, and save lives.

Accidents on Virginia roadways are responsible for the deaths of 8,034 people during the last ten years, as reported by government bodies in Virginia. As a result of the fact that 791 of those fatalities, or 10%, happened in October, this month has been statistically determined to be the most hazardous month of the year in terms of collision fatalities. In the month of October 2021, there were approximately 12,000 accidents in Virginia, which resulted in 86 fatalities and over 5,200 injuries. According to the reports of the police, approximately half of those who were murdered were not wearing seat belts, using car seats, or using booster seats when they should have been.
