VDOT encourages drivers to stay home ahead of upcoming winter storms

The Lynchburg District of the Virginia Department of Transportation said it is prepared to respond to dangerous driving conditions caused by forecasted winter weather.
Current forecasts predict rain, sleet, freezing rain and snow during several winter storms from Thursday night to Sunday.

VDOT said its crews will begin emergency operations Thursday night to deal with the first round of weather. VDOT said its crew members are prepared to push away snow, as appropriate, and apply chemicals and abrasives to help with melting and traction on the roads.

VDOT urges drivers to keep an eye on local forecasts and to avoid travel during storms because snow or ice on roads makes travel dangerous. The department also encourages drivers who must be on the road to slow down, increase following distance and use VDOT’s free 511 tools to find out about road conditions.
Crews will start response efforts on primary, highly traveled roads first then shift to secondary roads and neighborhoods once the main roads are passable. The department said crews will treat roads with salt and sand to help the melting process and improve traction along roads.
