Students may learn about road rules at Westside Elementary School’s new traffic garden
ROANOKE, Va. – A new traffic garden has been added to the grounds of Westside Elementary School, where it will teach children about safe driving practices.
The beautiful garden was shown off to the public for the first time on Tuesday morning by Roanoke City Public Schools and officials from the city. It teaches children how to recognize different traffic signals in a place that is safe and supervised.
A robot was used as part of the construction process to draw the traffic lanes in the traffic garden. It is the first time that a robot has ever been used to build a traffic garden anywhere on the globe.
One student in the fifth grade said that she was thrilled to learn the guidelines for safe driving at school.
“I learned that its a really safe place for kids to realize how to learn how to ride a bike and how different people will help you and guide you,” Kalise Flood said.
The Westside primary school’s instructors are going to start incorporating the newly opened traffic garden into their lessons now that it’s available to the public.
The administrators of the school have high hopes that it will bring the community’s rate of pedestrian accidents down.
