School zone cameras recently activated in Altavista

ALTAVISTA, Va. – School zone cameras in Altavista have recently been activated. That implies that a ticket will be given to drivers who are found going more than 10 miles per hour faster than the posted speed limit in a school zone.

When the flashing lights are on, a violation may be issued to the driver.

Infractions will result in a civil penalty of one hundred dollars, which will not appear on a person’s driving record.

The Altavista Police Chief, Tommy Merricks, said that everything is being done in an attempt to keep your children safe.

“We have a lot of kids, especially at this location at the combined school, that walk to school, and we hope that it’s going to slow people down and raise awareness because if it saves one child from getting hurt, it’s worth it,” said Merricks.

Bedford Avenue at Altavista Combined School and Lynch Mill Road at Altavista Elementary School are where the cameras are located.
