Roanoke City Council discussed findings of recent gun violence prevention efforts at Monday’s meeting

ROANOKE, Va. – During the meeting that took place on Monday afternoon, the City Council of Roanoke discussed the findings of recent efforts to prevent gun violence. According to the reports, this past weekend in Roanoke, there were two people shot.

In October, according to a report from Roanoke’s Chief of Police, police responded to four gunshots that resulted in injuries. In its annual event last year, “Groceries not Guns” managed to collect over 150 weapons.

At the meeting on Monday, the president of the NAACP Roanoke branch gave a speech and referred to the ongoing violence as an epidemic in the community.

The Roanoke City Council, in addition to the discussion of gun violence, also decided to change the name of the Roanoke City Jail to the Roanoke City Adult Detention Center.
