Roanoke City Council considers plastic bag tax

ROANOKE, Va.  — The Roanoke City Council is considering a five cent tax on plastic bags during Monday afternoon’s meeting.
According to officials, the money raised from the tax could be used for environmental cleanup and waste education programs. It would also go toward giving reusable bags to low-income residents.
If the council approves the ordinance during the regular session — which starts at 2 p.m. on Monday, April 5 on the City of Roanoke Facebook page — there will be a public hearing on April 19.
If passed, the tax would go into effect in January 2022.
