Precautionary measures to protect children against COVID-19 as the school year begins

ROANOKE, Va. – In our area, the number of COVID-19 cases has stayed high, and over 700 new cases have been reported in the last week.

The Department of Health is encouraging parents to take precautionary measures for their children now that school has started again. This is to protect their children from becoming sick. It is recommended that people be up-to-date on their vaccinations, that children be encouraged to wear masks when they are in an indoor setting with close contact, and that they be mindful of others.

“As always as we go into flu season and upper-respiratory infection season, make sure that you cover your cough and practice proper hand hygiene,” said Dr. Cynthia Morrow, the Director of Roanoke City and Alleghany Health Districts.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that people aged 6 months and older get the COVID-19 vaccine, and those aged 5 years and older who are eligible should receive a booster.
