Martinsville students ready to compete in a regional Lego Robotics tournament

MARTINSVILLE, Va. – Students at elementary and middle schools in Martinsville are getting ready to compete in the regional qualifying round for the LEGO Robotics tournament.

This year, a LEGO robotics competition is being held in Martinsville Public Schools, and there are 12 teams totaling more than 100 students. In the past, the Martinsville robotics teams have done well in local, national, and even international competitions.

During the course of the competition, the students’ robots will be evaluated based on their design, their level of innovation, and their core values.

“The core value of robotics really helps the students to work with each other as a team to understand that everybody is part of a mission,” said Jill Collins, Martinsville Public Schools coordinator. “So, it really helps with team building.”

The tournament will start on Saturday at Martinsville Middle School and last until 2 o’clock in the afternoon.

The top three teams in the rankings will be given the opportunity to participate in the state tournament that will be held at James Madison University.

As a college student, making an extra buck now and then was very important. I started as a part-time reporter since I was 19 yo, and I couldn’t believe it might become a long-time career. I'm happy to be part of the Virginian Tribune's team.
