Local health expert comments on first fatality in U.S. caused by monkeypox

ROANOKE, Va. – Today, the Los Angeles County Health Department announced the first monkeypox-related fatality in the United States. The patient was stated to be seriously immunocompromised.

There are more than 400 instances in Virginia alone. In the previous two weeks, just one new case of monkeypox was recorded locally.

According to health professionals, the number is dropping in Virginia and nationwide.

“Overwhelmingly individuals who have monkeypox this is not a severe illness and there are always going to be outliers but that shouldn’t change the overwhelming data that this is a mild self-limited illness,” Dr. Cynthia Morrow, Director of the Roanoke City and Alleghany Health Districts said.

VDH continues to encourage people eligible to get the immunization against monkeypox.
