Lawsuit filed against Virginia school board over transgender students protection
Hanover, Virginia – The ACLU of Virginia has filed a lawsuit against a Virginia school board for refusing to comply with 2020 legislation that mandates districts to adopt transgender student protection.
According to the Washington Post, the American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia filed the complaint on behalf of five families in Hanover County on Thursday.
State education authorities were required to establish guidelines for the treatment of transgender children, and all school districts were expected to adopt guidelines that mirrored those rules.
The Hanover County School Board voted 4-to-3 against changing its regulations last month. The board “threatens transgender students’ whole identity, ostracizes them, and deprives them of basic humanity,” according to the lawsuit.
