Indoor masking recommended for 71 Virginia localities

RICHMOND, Va. — According to the COVID Community Levels published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), universal masking is once again recommended in 71 different communities throughout the Commonwealth. Some of these communities are located within Metro Richmond.

According to the most recent information provided by the Virginia Department of Health, the state’s seven-day positivity rate has decreased to 21.5%, new cases have increased by slightly over 1%, and 82.5% of Virginians aged 18 and older have gotten at least one dose of the vaccine. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported in its weekly update that the seven-day moving average for COVID cases in the United States had decreased by 9.9% as of August 17, and that 83.7% of the country’s total population (people 5 and older) had received at least one vaccine dose.

On Thursday, August 25, the agency published an updated version of the map, which had county-by-county color designations to indicate whether or not citizens should wear masks.

“There are three levels (low, medium, high), which are determined by looking at hospital beds being used by patients with COVID-19, new hospital admissions among people with COVID-19, and the total number of new COVID-19 cases in your area,” CDC officials said.
