FedEx to boost economic growth and create more job positions in Montgomery County: new facility set to open next year
Montgomery County, Virginia – Consumers are making more online purchases than ever. For the transportation companies making sure all these goods get where they’re supposed to go, it’s been a very profitable shift. This was especially notable during the pandemic and all the closures that came with it. Americans went crazy for online shopping, a trend that has now slowed and resembles the pre-pandemic period.
FedEx is among the largest logistics companies in the world, and such is the case in the United States. FedEx is the world’s largest cargo carrier by scheduled freight tonne kilometers and the fourth largest by fleet size. Just like DHL, Amazon Logistics, USPS, and UPS, FedEx operations have increased exponentially in recent years, and the company continues to expand in different areas across the nation to improve their network and respond accordingly to the growing demand.
FedEx is also investing in Virginia, and the company is about to open its Montgomery County facility some time next year. The 251,000-square-foot distribution center, located on 41 acres of land, will be opened in Falling Branch Corporate Park and will directly support the local economy, both in terms of new jobs and contracts with local companies.
“We’re always working and promoting ways to bring economic growth to Montgomery County,” said Sherri Blevins, Board of Supervisors Chairwoman.
According to Blevins, the FedEx facility is yet another proof that Montgomery County is a great area for doing business, and it will further boost the economic growth of the area. It still remains unknown how many jobs will be created, but we believe that hiring should start in the first quarter of 2023. This is FedEx’s official statement:
“FedEx Ground has entered into a lease agreement on a new, 251,000 square-foot distribution center located in Falling Branch Corporate Park in Christiansburg that is expected to be operational in 2023. The new facility will employ a mix of full and part-time team members. The company also will contract for package pickup and delivery services with service provider businesses that hire locally for driver, helper, manager and other positions. The site was chosen because of its ease of access to major highways, proximity to customers’ distribution centers and a strong local community workforce for recruiting employees.”
Local leaders are confident that FedEx’s investment will encourage other companies to invest in the Montgomery County area. Earlier this year, local leaders also abolished the merchant capital tax, and that will go into effect on January 1st.
