FBI advises Virginians to practice ‘safe cyber hygiene’ on mobile phones

ROANOKE, Va. – The FBI advises Virginians to practice safe cyber hygiene to prevent hackers from accessing their mobile phones.

According to the FBI, social media and dating applications are often used to commit scams. You may encounter hackers using fake profiles to request money transfers.

Good social hygiene includes using difficult passwords, updating your devices, and exercising caution while posting online.

An assistant special agent in charge of national security at the FBI Richmond office highlighted the importance of being aware of the identity of the person with whom one is communicating online.

“Part of the threat of cyber is there are bad people who are on the internet, not for the purpose of sharing or for altruistic reasons. Cyber attacks start with an individual targeting another individual for personal gain,” David Lewis said.

The FBI office should be notified as quickly as possible if you are subject to any fraudulent activities, according to the agents.
