Danville Utilities held ribbon-cutting ceremony for energy storage project

DANVILLE, Va. – Danville Utilities is excited about its new battery energy storage project.

On Tuesday morning, people of the community, Mayor Alonzo Jones, and members of the City Council came together to celebrate the completion of the new project by cutting the ribbon.

During times of low demand for power, Delorean Power’s new system would charge batteries with electricity so that they could be used during times of high demand.

The energy storage will result in savings of more than $40 million for Danville Utilities and, therefore, cheaper energy prices for the city’s people.

“It’s critical when we’re trying to stabilize rates and keep electric rates under control when we have cost increases in all areas,” said Jason Grey, director of Danville Utilities. “This is a way to help mitigate those cost increases so we don’t have to increase rates. We’re able to keep rates the same or potentially even one day lower rates.”

The construction of the project was initially started in March and is now complete and running as intended.
