Chase leads to crash and arrest in SE Roanoke; woman hospitalized
ROANOKE, Va. – One man was arrested after a chase and crash in southeast Roanoke Thursday.
Shortly before 10 a.m. August 4, Roanoke Police officers on patrol in the 400 block of Elm Avenue SE saw a person in a parked vehicle they knew had active felony warrants, according to police. Officers in two marked patrol vehicles blocked the immediate exit routes for the man’s vehicle to keep him from going anyway, but the suspect, Tyler A. Jones, 32 of Roanoke, rammed into both patrol vehicles and drove off according to police.
Officers chased him as he sped away, according to police, until he tried to illegally pass another driver on Riverland Road SE near Garden City Boulevard. Jones hit the vehicle and lost control of his own. His vehicle rolled and stopped, at which point he got out and ran, according to police. Officers caught him after a foot chase. After treatment for minor injuries, he was taken to the Roanoke City Jail and charged with two counts of assault on law enforcement officers and felony eluding. He was also served with active warrants for revocation of a suspended sentence on a previous narcotics charge and felony eluding from Roanoke County.
In Jones’ vehicle, police found a woman who was unresponsive. She was taken to a hospital; information about her condition has not been released. The driver of the vehicle that was hit was not seriously hurt, and no police officers were hurt.
Virginia State Police will lead the investigation into the crash, as it resulted from Jones allegedly fleeing from Roanoke Police.
