The men’s singles competition at the U.S. Open was won by Carlos Alcaraz of Spain after he defeated Casper Ruud of Norway in four sets. This was Alcaraz’s first victory at a tournament held in Flushing Meadows. Since Rafael Nadal won the French Open in 2005, Alcaraz, who is just 19, is the only male youngster to win a Grand Slam tournament since then.
Although Alcaraz won the opening set, the No. 5 seed, Ruud, was able to come back and win the second. Ruud had a lead of 6-5 in the grueling third set, which lasted more than 70 minutes and concluded with Alcaraz leveling the score after a tense game that lasted 15 minutes. After that, Alcaraz breezed through the tiebreaker, winning 7-1.
The match was decided in the fourth and final set, which Alcaraz won 6-3.
The United States’ Frances Tiafoe of the United States, who had previously prevailed against Rafael Nadal, was the opponent for the quarterfinal match that Alcaraz won in five sets.
