Roanoke, Virginia – A derailment Wednesday morning in Roanoke is under investigation to determine the cause.
Nine cars derailed from a train leaving the Roanoke railyard at Randolph Street about 2:15 a.m., according to a Norfolk Southern spokesman. No injuries were reported.
Amtrak Northeast Regional trains 171 & 176 are not operating between Washington, D.C. and Roanoke Wednesday because of the blockage on the track.
Norfolk Southern personnel and contractors have cleared six cars, and are working to clear the remaining three. A hazardous materials response team has given the all-clear, according to the spokesman.
After crews remove the remaining cars, track repair and inspection will begin. No estimated time to reopen the track has been given.
