Roanoke Valley able to vaccinate those 16 and up thanks to surge in supply
ROANOKE, Va. — As of Wednesday, those age 16 or older in the Roanoke Valley were eligible to get their COVID-19 vaccine.
Health leaders in the area say that the supply of vaccine doses is an answer to their prayers.
“I saw the email and I was so surprised, Kendra Earls, a Radford University Student, said. “I immediately called my mom and was like I have to come in.”
“I knew I wanted to get it because I felt like it would make everything easier,” Kristie Robers, a Roanoke resident, said.
Health leaders said that the expansion of vaccine eligibility is due to a recent surge in supply. On Wednesday, healthcare workers administered 5,000 shots.
“It’s heartwarming to know that we are finally at that stage where we can say now it’s everyone’s turn,” Dr. Morrow, the director of the Roanoke City Allegheny Health District, said.
Sen. Mark Warner stopped by on Wednesday to check out the clinic.
“This is a sign of success frankly of federal government resources, state coordination, private sector with Carilion,” Warner said.
The mass clinics in the Roanoke Valley will continue over the coming weeks until demand for the vaccine tapers off.
