Health officials reporting rabid fox in Roanoke

ROANOKE, Va. – A fox caught in Roanoke on September 3 has tested positive for rabies, according to the Roanoke City and Alleghany Health Districts.

The fox was found in the area between Crescent Boulevard and Starkey Road, called Cave Spring.

The health authority is reminding homeowners that, under Virginia law, dog and cat owners are obliged to maintain rabies immunizations for animals four months and older.

Residents are advised to stay away from wild animals and to report any strange behavior by them.

The Roanoke City and Alleghany Health Districts must be notified of all animal bites and rabies exposures.
