Roanoke Valley Libraries are working to enhance users’ online experience

ROANOKE, Va. – The Roanoke Valley Libraries have decided to go forward with the implementation of OCLC Wise, which is the first community engagement system designed specifically for public libraries.

According to the organization, people may expect a user-friendly online platform that provides them with the chance to customize their accounts, which will assist them in locating content that is of interest to them.

Ann Tripp, the director of the Salem Library, points out that “many people are familiar with the online catalog.” “OCLC Wise is that, and much much more,” she added. A classic integrated library system, sometimes known as an ILS, is responsible for maintaining user and collection data. On the other hand, a community engagement system like Wise makes it simpler for users to learn about and participate in the variety of activities that are available in their libraries.

Wise enables users to locate what they are interested in reading, such as recently published books or forthcoming events, and get automated notifications whenever anything is posted that the user may find interesting. Wise also offers its customers a mobile app for smartphones, which enables them to do a variety of tasks such as browsing the library catalog, managing their account, scanning ISBNs, getting alerts, posting on social media, and communicating with the library.

The new community involvement platform is going to be implemented by RVL sometime in the fall.
