Medical emergency considered factor in Rockbridge County fatal crash

Roanoke, Virginia – A fatal crash along I-81 on Sunday was due to a medical emergency, according to Virginia State Police.
Officers responded to a single-vehicle crash happened around 7:36 on Sunday evening near 204.7 mile marker in Rockbridge County. Officers say a 2021 Toyota Tundra hit a fence after it ran off the road while headed south.
The 49-year-old driver, Mario J. Pires-Vieramenezes of Thurmont, Maryland was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to preliminary investigation report, a medical emergency is consider a factor in the fatal crash.
Investigation is ongoing.
