Man arrested while attempting to steal catalytic converter

NORFOLK, Va. — On Sunday morning, a police officer in Norfolk arrested a man who was attempting to steal a catalytic converter.

The attempted theft took place in the 8900 block of Granby Street at around 5:30 in the morning.

According to the Norfolk Police Department, a patrolling officer reportedly overheard the sound of a power tool cutting through metal. The officer looked underneath the vehicle and noticed the catalytic converter on the ground and a man who appeared to be working on the car.

The officer reportedly determined the vehicle did not belong to the man and placed 51-year-old Billy F. Jarrell under arrest. He was charged with catalytic converter theft, vandalism, possession of burglarious tools, and conspiracy.
