A Roanoke barbershop offers free back-to-school haircuts for children

ROANOKE, Va. – A barbershop in Roanoke is offering free back-to-school haircuts for children.

As students queued up on Melrose Avenue to receive a free haircut at First Impressions, barbers turned on their razors and cleaned up their seats.

For the last 23 years, George Harrington has been not just cutting hair but also changing people’s lives.

“When the kids see themselves with a nice cut they feel good,” Harrington said.

He added that when you walk through the door, you are not just a client but a member of the family.

“We are more than just me cutting your hair. I might be your brother. Nine times out of 10 you will be best of friends,” he added.

The barbers and stylists also give the children encouraging words while cutting their hair as a way to boost their confidence before they return to school.
