VDH reports 272 new COVID-19 cases, smallest single-day case increase since April 2020; 11 new deaths as of Monday

RICHMOND, Va. – Virginia health officials reported a total of 670,456 COVID-19 cases and 11,029 virus-related deaths as of Monday, including 272 new confirmed and probable cases — which is the smallest single-day increase in new cases since mid-April 2020 — and 11 new confirmed and probable fatalities from around the Commonwealth.
The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) confirmed 521,930 cases and 9,307 deaths are related to the virus as of Monday, May 17. However, 148,526 cases and 1,722 deaths are still reported as “probable.”
Even though the VDH did not provide updates on the data for individual localities over the weekend, according to VDH’s Monday update, more than 101,000 cases have been reported from the following localities in southwest and central Virginia:

  • Alleghany County: 1,353 cases, 60 hospitalizations, and 48 deaths
  • Amherst County: 2,930 cases, 123 hospitalizations, and 37 deaths
  • Appomattox County: 1,593 cases, 68 hospitalizations, and 25 deaths
  • Bath County: 271 cases, 9 hospitalizations, and 10 deaths
  • Bedford County: 6,403 cases, 230 hospitalizations, and 102 deaths
  • Bland County: 678 cases, 27 hospitalizations, and 10 deaths
  • Botetourt County: 2,534 cases, 65 hospitalizations, and 38 deaths
  • Buena Vista: 910 cases, 22 hospitalizations, and 20 deaths
  • Campbell County: 4,497 cases, 168 hospitalizations, and 88 deaths
  • Carroll County: 2,661 cases (-1), 212 hospitalizations, and 73 deaths
  • Charlotte County: 866 cases, 55 hospitalizations, and 21 deaths
  • Covington: 601 cases, 29 hospitalizations, and 13 deaths
  • Craig County: 313 cases, 18 hospitalizations, and 5 deaths
  • Danville: 4,416 cases, 286 hospitalizations, and 137 deaths
  • Floyd County: 862 cases, 31 hospitalizations, and 23 deaths
  • Franklin County: 4,048 cases, 183 hospitalizations, and 77 deaths
  • Galax: 1,165 cases, 97 hospitalizations, and 53 deaths
  • Giles County: 1,283 cases, 51 hospitalizations, and 22 deaths
  • Grayson County: 1,471 cases, 94 hospitalizations, and 35 deaths
  • Halifax County: 2,813 cases, 78 hospitalizations, and 77 deaths
  • Henry County: 4,597 cases, 358 hospitalizations, and 123 deaths
  • Highland County: 109 cases, 1 hospitalization, and 1 death
  • Lexington: 1,204 cases, 26 hospitalizations, and 32 deaths
  • Lynchburg: 7,814 cases, 333 hospitalizations, and 150 deaths
  • Martinsville: 1,602 cases, 158 hospitalizations, and 76 deaths
  • Montgomery County: 9,387 cases, 185 hospitalizations, and 96 deaths
  • Nelson County: 899 cases, 39 hospitalizations, and 13 deaths
  • Patrick County: 1,351 cases (-1), 104 hospitalizations, and 43 deaths
  • Pittsylvania County: 5,535 cases, 249 hospitalizations, and 81 deaths
  • Pulaski County: 2,653 cases, 126 hospitalizations, and 61 deaths
  • Radford: 2,146 cases, 38 hospitalizations, and 18 deaths
  • Roanoke City: 8,463 cases, 250 hospitalizations, and 192 deaths
  • Roanoke County: 8,258 cases, 177 hospitalizations, and 144 deaths
  • Rockbridge County: 1,552 cases, 52 hospitalizations, and 46 deaths
  • Salem: 2,167 cases, 72 hospitalizations, and 48 deaths
  • Wythe County: 2,657 cases, 155 hospitalizations, and 78 deaths

Since Sunday, May 16, the VDH reported four new COVID-19 cases in Bedford County, four in Roanoke County, three in Botetourt County, three in Buena Vista, three in Danville, two in Franklin County, two in Henry County, two in Lynchburg, two in Wythe County, one in Alleghany County, one in Appomattox County, one in Bland County, one in Covington, one in Floyd County, one in Giles County, one in Martinsville, one in Montgomery County, one in Pittsylvania County, one in Pulaski County, and one in Salem.
In addition, of the 11 new virus-related deaths reported on Monday, the department says one is from Floyd County, one is from Nelson County, and one is from Pittsylvania County.
However, between Sunday and Monday, the VDH reported one less coronavirus case in Carroll County and one less case in Patrick County.
Health officials say they have received 29,242 total records of confirmed and probable virus-related hospitalizations around Virginia as of Monday, which is 22 more hospitalizations than VDH reported on Sunday.
Of these newly-reported hospitalizations from Monday, two are from Franklin County, one is from Rockbridge County, and one is from Wythe County.
