12th Green Hill Highland Games will be held in Salem on August 27
SALEM, Va – The Green Hill Highland Games will return to Salem on Saturday, August 27, after a few years’ hiatus due to the pandemic.
This is a fun and free event that is appropriate for children as well as adults. There will be bagpipes, Celtic Clans, athletes, and more.
You get the opportunity to see some of the world’s most impressive athletes compete in kilts while taking part in strength competitions. The Weight Throw, the Scottish Hammer Throw, the Stone Put, and the Caber Toss are all included in this competition.
Additionally, there will be authentic Celtic music and displays of Scottish heritage.
The Virginia Highlands Pipes and Drums are the oldest pipes and drums group in southwest Virginia and will perform at the opening ceremony.
To honor the Celtic history and culture of Southwest Virginia, there will be members of seventeen different Celtic clans present.
“The Roanoke Valley’s history is deep in the immigration of the Scotts, the Irish, Celtic heritage and culture. So, this is an opportunity to showcase that to the Roanoke Valley and it is free. It is an opportunity to give back to the public,” Chad Clark, the Athletics Directors said.
The Green Hill Highland Games raise money for Ronald McDonald House Charities Southwest Virginia, which is an organization that helps the families of sick and injured children getting medical care in the Roanoke area by giving them a safe, supportive place to stay.
Green Hill Park will host the games between the hours of 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.
